The City has started installing safety enhancements at the intersection of Menlo Avenue and University Drive. Intersection changes include a lane reduction on Menlo Avenue, complemented by new striping and bollards designed to help improve the safety of pedestrians crossing Menlo Avenue.

This intersection has a history of pedestrian collisions, especially for people crossing Menlo Avenue. The Complete Streets Commission and the City Council reviewed the safety enhancements and they will be installed as a pilot, using temporary materials that can easily be adjusted or removed. Staff will collect data on travel patterns at the intersection and collisions and report findings to the Complete Streets Commission.

A future city project will replace the existing crosswalk, which is deteriorating. That project will take into account the findings of the pilot and may result in making some features permanent or restoring the intersection to its initial configuration.
