Economic development

Successful businesses in our community create a vibrant environment and generate retail sales tax revenue needed to support city services. Staff works to identify new businesses that will enhance the Menlo Park business community and the city’s overall economic health. Our staff acts as a business concierge by helping to coordinate the efforts of other departments to assist potential businesses identify the simplest possible approval process.

Staff works with businesses to offer assistance through referrals to State and Federal programs, strategic planning for expansion approval and marketing/networking opportunities. Staff works closely with the Finance Division to monitor various revenue sources and provides research support as well as assistance with revenue projections. In addition, our office researches public-private partnerships to enhance city revenue. 

Economic Development Program History

Significant work has been done to position Menlo Park as a strong regional leader in both retail and office sectors. Studies have shown Menlo Park to have one of the most educated populations in the Bay Area, high average incomes among residents, and a substantial share of the workforce employed in the innovation sector. Major corporations have made their home in Menlo Park, including Meta, Robinhood Markets, Pacific Biosciences, along with the largest concentration of VC tech funders in the country.
