Let’s keep walking and rolling in the summer!
Published on June 10, 2025
With school out, summer is the perfect time to keep your kids active by walking and biking in Menlo Park! Whether it's a quick bike ride to the park, a walk to the library or a family stroll through Downtown, small moments of movement can help our students stay healthy, build confidence and get more involved with the Menlo Park community.
Biking and walking over the summer can also help children maintain the travel habits they built during the school year. What’s more, the summer break offers ample time to prepare new riders for their first year of walking or biking to school, or help older students gain more independence in a safe and familiar setting.
Summer Safety Tips
Here are some safety tips to consider as your family prepares to walk and roll in the summer:
- Plan your route — stick to low-traffic streets, trails and bike paths.
- Check out Menlo Park’s School Walk and Roll Maps to identify safe routes to your student’s school.
- Always wear a properly fitted helmet while biking, skating or scootering.
- Practice looking both ways at intersections and using hand signals when biking.
- Stay hydrated and avoid walking or biking during the hottest part of the day. If you wait until the evening to get outdoors, make sure you wear bright clothing and that your bike is outfitted with lights and reflectors.
- Review the Menlo Park SRTS Resources website, which provides additional safety tips and activity ideas to make walking and rolling more fun.
This summer, continue to make movement part of your family’s daily routine. A little time outside each day can go a long way toward building healthy, confident and active kids!
