RethinkWaste and SCS Engineers, a contractor of the City of Menlo Park, will be performing waste checks of residential cart and commercial bin contents. These annual reviews, required by the State of California and the SB 1383: State organics law, are performed to monitor contamination levels and overflow. The reviews occur this year from the last week of October to the first week of November.

Proper bin sorting is important to help keep organics out of landfills where they break down without oxygen. Organics and compostable materials placed in landfills make up over one-third of the material going into local landfills now and this creates a large amount of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

If there is contamination found, there will be educational tags and information provided to those customers. Containers that contain overflow or contamination may not be collected. If your cart is not collected, call Recology at 650-595-3900. To learn more about what is acceptable in the compost, recycling and landfill containers, visit the WhatBin webpage.
