Roles and responsibilities

The Environmental Quality Commission is charged primarily with advising the City Council on matters involving environmental protection, improvement and sustainability.

Commission priorities

  • Preserving heritage trees
  • Using best practices to maintain city trees
  • Preserving and expanding the urban canopy
  • Making determinations on appeals of heritage tree removal permits
  • Administering annual Environmental Quality Awards program
  • Organizing annual Arbor Day Event; typically a tree planting event 
  • Advising on programs and policies related to protection of natural areas, recycling and waste reduction, environmentally sustainable practices, air and water pollution prevention, climate protection, and water and energy conservation

Meetings, agendas, minutes and videos

The Environmental Quality Commission meetings are generally held on the 3rd  Wednesday of the month starting at 6 p.m. Meeting dates and times are subject to change.

The city website provides meeting agendas, minutes and videos for public review. For regular meetings, agendas will be posted no later than 72 hours in advance; agendas for special meetings will be posted no later than 24 hours in advance. Meeting minutes are available following approval. Videos are typically posted within 24 hours after the meeting.
