Disasters can occur at any time, with little warning. Don’t let an earthquake catch you off guard! Californians can receive earthquake warnings with the state’s free MyShake app, which can be downloaded on the App Store or Google Play on smartphones or tablets.

The MyShake app issues warnings for earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or larger. Wireless Emergency Alerts (text-like emergency messages) are issued for earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or larger. Warnings are currently available in both English and Spanish, depending on the user’s mobile phone settings.

What’s new to the MyShake app? The HomeBase feature!

The newest feature allows users to set a “HomeBase” location to receive earthquake warning alerts, even if location services are turned off. The update allows users to receive earthquake notifications for multiple locations and improves MyShake’s ability to send timely alerts to users.

To activate the “HomeBase” function, users must update the MyShake app, navigate to “Setting” and select “Add HomeBase Location.”
