Did you know, about every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood? The American Red Cross says the nation is facing a shortage and critical need for blood.

Blood donation appointments can be made by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor App or by visiting redcrossblood.org. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

To ensure the safety of both patients and donors, these are some of the requirements donors must meet to be eligible to donate blood based on their donation type. To donate blood:

  • You can donate every 56 days
  • You must be in good health and feeling well
  • You must be at least 16 years old in most states
  • You must weigh at least 110 lbs.

To view other eligibility requirements for students, visit the Red Cross blood donor eligibility webpage.

Before your appointment:

  • Always be sure to drink plenty of water before donating blood
  • Eat an iron-rich meal
