Celebrate National Public Works Week

Happy National Public Works Week! This year’s theme "Ready & Resilient" showcases the superheroes that lie within each and every public works professional. Always ready to serve their communities, and resilient as ever in their abilities to pick themselves up off the ground after encountering challenges.

The resiliency of Public Works was on full display during a large storm late last year. The storm caused localized flooding, including Bay Road. Staff from Public Works and Police were quick to respond, providing time for the Chrysler Pump Station to move water from the affected area and were able to successfully clear Bay Road. Understanding the critical role this pump station plays, Public Works is improving this facility through the design and construction of a new pump station, with funding support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency through a $5 million local hazard mitigation grant.

As climate change influences the frequency and severity of storms, replacing this pump station is a critical step to in preventing future flooding. The Chrysler Pump Project is only one of the ongoing projects our Public Work’s Department continues to work on to help improve the quality of life in the City of Menlo Park.

Next week, the City Council will proclaim the week of May 15–21, 2022, as National Public Works Week and asks all citizens to join them in thanking our Public Works staff for their contributions in protecting our health, safety and quality of life.
