August is National Water Quality Month

August is National Water Quality Month, which is the perfect time to educate ourselves on where our water comes from and how we can preserve it. Educating ourselves and others is the best way to ensure that water continues to be high quality and free of contamination.

Here are some simple things you can do at home to protect your water quality.

  1. Pick up after your pet
  2. Don’t hose down your driveway, use a broom
  3. Don’t use fertilizer made with phosphorus
  4. Don’t flush expired or unwanted medication down the toilet
  5. Take used oil or antifreeze to a service station or recycling center
  6. Avoid using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products
  7. Use a rain barrel to collect rainwater

Each year, Menlo Park Municipal Water produces an annual consumer confidence report on water quality conditions for the previous calendar year. The 2021 water quality report contains a summary of water quality sampling results and other important information. The report describes where your water comes from and how it compares to drinking water standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water, as well as includes water rate information.

Menlo Park Municipal Water wants to remind its customers to continue to conserve water during the extreme drought. The City Council declared a Stage 2 drought emergency that requires all customers reduce water use up to 20%. Moving to Stage 2 means that customers must limit their irrigation watering to two days a week.

  • Odd street address – Tuesday and Saturday
  • Even street address – Wednesday and Sunday
  • No number street address – Wednesday and Sunday
  • Irrigating is prohibited between the hours of 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
