The month of January is usually a period of critical blood shortages. People stop donating blood during the holidays and when they get sick during cold and flu season. Blood drives also may be canceled or postponed due to storms. The American Red Cross celebrates National Blood Donor Month each January and recognizes the lifesaving contribution of blood and platelet donors.

Both the American Red Cross and Stanford Blood Center is facing a critical need for blood, platelets and plasma. Blood donors are strongly encouraged to give in the coming days to help replenish the blood supply to sustainable levels.

Blood donation appointments can be made by downloading the American Red Cross Blood Donor App or by visiting redcrossblood.org.

Stanford Blood Center blood donation appointments can be made through the online scheduler for the Menlo Park donor center or call 888-723-7831.

Before your appointment:

  • Always be sure to drink plenty of water before donating
  • Eat an iron-rich meal
  • Avoid alcohol and fatty foods for 24 hours
