On Thursday, Nov. 14, Menlo Park will honor Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, a day celebrating diversity, courage and the importance of safe routes for students. This special day not only commemorates the remarkable story of Ruby Bridges but also encourages families to use active transportation, fostering a healthier and stronger community.

The Story of Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges made history in 1960 as the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana. At only six years old, Ruby bravely walked into her elementary school amidst hostility and segregation. Her courage in the face of adversity quickly became a symbol of the civil rights movement and the fight for equality in education.

Today, Ruby’s story of resilience and determination to pursue an education in a safe environment resonates with the mission of Safe Routes to School (SRTS): ensuring that every child can safely walk or bike to school without fear or discrimination.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day emphasizes the importance of walking as a safe and healthy mode of sustainable transportation. Walking to school promotes physical activity, reduces traffic congestion and contributes to a cleaner and safer environment. It also provides an opportunity for families to bond, fostering a greater sense of community.

Menlo Park invites all families to partake in this year’s Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day by walking, biking, or rolling to school on Thursday, Nov. 14!

As you prepare for the day, consider making it a community event by encouraging your neighbors and friends to join in. Take this opportunity to educate children about Ruby Bridges’ story and what it means to stand up for justice and equality. Learn more about the event.

Join us on Nov. 14 by walking, biking or rolling together. We will not only pay tribute to Ruby’s legacy but also demonstrate our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
