CERT Academy increases emergency prepared volunteers
Published on April 21, 2025
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) academy, operated by the Menlo Park Fire Protection District, recently completed training for its latest group of volunteers. The CERT program provides community members with hands-on training in basic disaster preparedness, fire extinguisher usage, disaster medical care, first aid training, search and rescue techniques and neighborhood team building. With the completion of the recent academy, the number of CERT-trained volunteers on the Menlo Park Fire team has increased to over 70.
CERT volunteers are a critical component of Menlo Park’s broader disaster and emergency preparedness strategy. In the immediate aftermath of a major incident — when professional first responders may be delayed or overwhelmed — trained CERT members can make a life-saving difference. Volunteers are prepared to assist neighbors, provide initial care, assess hazards and support organized response efforts until additional help arrives.
The next CERT Academy starts in September and is currently accepting registrations. Menlo Fire offers additional emergency preparedness trainings at menlofirecert.com. To learn how to prepare yourself and your family for emergencies, please visit menlopark.gov/prepared.
