Use this summer break to prepare for walking and rolling to school in the fall! Whether walking, biking, skateboarding or using a mobility device, planning and practicing your route ahead of the school year can help reduce first-day stress and build your child’s confidence as they enter a new year of learning.

The Menlo Park SRTS Program encourages families to try out their walking or biking routes in advance. A great place to start is by reviewing Menlo Park’s School Walk and Roll Maps, which highlight recommended routes to local schools. When exploring additional routes, look for paths with sidewalks, crosswalks, traffic signals or stop signs and low-traffic areas for a safer experience. Lastly, for those biking, be sure to practice key habits(PDF, 2MB): use proper hand signals, always wear a helmet and perform an ABC bike safety check before each ride.

For additional tips, maps and planning tools, visit the Menlo Park SRTS website.

The Hillview Middle School Practice Group Ride returns in August 2025! This fun and educational event is a great opportunity for incoming middle schoolers to try out their school bike commute. Last year, over 40 participants from Laurel, Encinal and Oak Knoll schools joined the ride. The event will also include an overview of the rules of the road and other SRTS resources available to the school community.

Save the date for Saturday, August 16. We hope to see you there!
