Coleman Avenue Pilot project

On April 29, City Council approved removing parking from the north side of the City portion of Coleman Avenue and installing a stop sign on Coleman Avenue and Santa Monica Avenue to allow sufficient roadway space for the pilot. The pilot will be installed in late-June/early-July to improve accessibility and mobility on Coleman Avenue from Willow Road to the City/County boundary, approximately near Riordan Place.

This corridor serves many students who walk and bike to nearby schools including Lower Laurel Campus, Laurel Upper Campus, Menlo-Atherton High School, Silicon Valley International School, KIPP Valiant Community Prep and more. This pilot will improve mobility and connectivity for students who walk and bike to school.

The pilot installation will include:

  • Parking removal on the north side of the City portion of Coleman Avenue
  • Stop signs on Coleman Avenue and Santa Monica Avenue
  • Traffic calming through rubberized speed cushions and a pilot bike lane on the City portion of Coleman Avenue

Between late-June/early-July, the contractor will deploy a-frames to notify residents of the incoming installation. The a-frames will include the days and times parking will be prohibited to allow for the pilot installation. Following installation, parking will continue to be prohibited on the north side of Coleman Avenue.

Menlo Park has an overnight parking ordinance. The parking of any vehicle is prohibited between the hours of 2–5 a.m. within a residential zone or within 300 feet of a residential zone, or in a public parking lot, including parking lots serving parks and recreation facilities in Menlo Park. The parking ordinance is in effect seven days a week.

In order to avoid being issued a citation, parked vehicles must have a valid residential overnight parking permit displayed, a virtual permit issued to a license plate number or a valid DMV-issued disabled person placard or disabled person license plates.

Menlo Park offers temporary and annual residential overnight parking permits. For more information on qualifications and how to purchase overnight parking permits, please visit our website.
