Police awarded CHP Cannabis Tax Fund Grant

Published on November 02, 2021

Menlo Park, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) awarded Menlo Park's police department $376,662 through the 2021/2022 CHP Cannabis Tax Fund Law Enforcement Grant.

This funding is the result of Proposition 64, the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act, which provided specified cannabis tax funding to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to administer local grants for education, prevention, and enforcement programs regarding impaired driving. Funding for the grants comes from a tax on the cultivation and sale of cannabis and cannabis products sold in California since January 2018.

The primary purpose of the Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program (CTFGP) is for education and enforcement of driving under the influence (DUI), as well as improving toxicology DUID testing for impaired driving cases. The Menlo Park Police Department will utilize the Cannabis Tax Fund Grant to field officers to proactively educate and enforce laws related to driving under the influence by conducting several outreach efforts and saturation patrols through the term of the grant. This additional funding source will be utilized to expand our capabilities with the goal of improving roadway safety.

We thank CHP for the opportunities this grant program affords the department and our community.
