We can't control storms and weather hazards, but you can take precautions to protect yourself, your loved ones and your property. The City of Menlo Park encourages our community to learn how to best prepare for flooding and prioritize your safety in the event of harsh weather conditions. Take note of our flood guidance below to mitigate risks and prevent damage and harm during storms.

How can you help reduce flooding in your community?
  • Reduce flooding risk by keeping bodies of water free of debris.
  • Do not dump materials into storm drains. It is illegal and can create a safety hazard.
Is your home in a floodplain?
  • Upon request, the City can make a free flood zone determination for your property and provide one-on-one advice or a site visit to discuss the following:
    • Historical information.
    • Special flood related hazards.
    • Special rules for building in the flood plain.
    • Ideas for protecting your property from flood damage and drainage issues, including elevating structures and damage-prone components above the flood level and wet flood-proofing portions of structures so that water won’t cause damage.

Check your insurance
  • Contact your insurance agent to ensure your policy includes flood damage. Mandatory flood insurance may be required based on your property’s location.
Be prepared before a storm
  • It is important to be prepared since winter storms can cause floods, uprooted trees drowned utility lines and landslides.
  • Discuss an emergency plan with your family. Designate a family meeting spot and prepare a disaster kit for your home and car with supplies.
  • Store valuables and important documents in waterproof container, including:
    • First aid kit and essential medicine.
    • Insurance policies.
    • Portable radio, flashlight and extra batteries.
    • Cash (ATMs may not be working).
Be informed during a storm
  • Tune your radio to KCBS 740 AMI/106.9 FM, and 90.1 FM for emergency information.
  • Evacuate immediately if asked to do so by local authority. Do not enter blocked off areas or drive across flooded roads.
  • Use telephone ONLY for emergency needs and to report dangerous conditions.
  • Report downed utility lines.
Alerts and information
  • Residents can sign up for alert notification services to receive critical information on emergencies. When you sign up with Menlo Park emergency alerts, you can be reached by phone, text or e-mail within minutes. Sign up at: menlopark.gov/emergencyalerts
Be ready after the storm
  • Stay tuned to radio, television and news reports for information and instruction from local authorities.
  • Return home only when authorized to do so.
  • Any improvements or repairs greater than 50 percent of the structure's value need to meet National Flood Insurance Program requirements.
  • Please obtain a permit from the building department before making any significant repairs or improvements.
