Fireworks buyback event

The Menlo Park Police Department, in partnership with other local agencies, will host a fireworks buyback event Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 690 Broadway St. in Redwood City. Turn in illegal fireworks and receive up to $200 cash. No questions asked. Deputies will be onsite sharing fireworks safety information and assisting with safe fireworks disposal.

The program aims to enhance community safety by encouraging residents to turn in fireworks, which are illegal in all of San Mateo County except Pacifica and San Bruno. All fireworks, including those designated “safe and sane,” are prohibited in the City of Menlo Park.

In the last 15 years, there has been a 25% increase in fireworks injuries. Fireworks pose a serious risk of fire and can cause significant anxiety in adults and children, especially veterans and others with post-traumatic stress, as well as pets.

There is a $1,000 citation issued to any person who violates this ordinance. Additionally, possession of fireworks is a misdemeanor under California Health and Safety Code - HSC § 12561 and could result in imprisonment in the county jail for a period of up to six months if the violation leads to substantial bodily injuries or property damage.
