Solo vehicle collision results in gas leak & evacuations: No injuries

Menlo Park, Calif. — On October 8, 2022 at approximately 2:15 p.m., Menlo Park Police Department received a request for assistance with fire units at a vehicle collision in a rear parking lot at Sharon Heights Shopping Center. Responding officers received information that a vehicle struck a gas line in the parking lot, causing a large gas leak. Police resources engaged with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Palo Alto Police, Atherton Police, and other agencies to conduct a coordinated evacuation of the Sharon Heights Shopping Center due to the potential from the gas leak. 

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. Menlo Park police officers worked closely with Menlo Park Fire Protection District and the Woodside Fire District ensuring scene safety and coordinating evacuations while awaiting response from PG&E. Surrounding police agencies were helpful in securing the scene, assisting with evacuations, and ensuring any calls for service in Menlo Park were handled as needed during this event.

The evacuations were completed efficiently, and residents in nearby buildings were able to shelter in place. The leak was secured by PG&E at around 3:40 p.m., and the evacuations and shelter orders were lifted.
