Encinal Elementary is working on a bike curriculum for students
Published on March 17, 2022
Stay tuned for a new bike curriculum in Menlo Park! Encinal Elementary Assistant Principal Ellen Kraska and their parent Safe Routes to School champion are developing a bicycle safety curriculum intended for fifth grade students and middle school students. The curriculum is created to be delivered in-classroom and teaches children how to safely navigate Menlo Park streets to go to school.
The lesson includes:
- Appropriate clothing and gear (bright clothes, lights, helmet, lock)
- Planning your route
- Rules of the road
- How to be visible and predictable
- Emergencies and other sticky situations
The team has collected feedback on the curriculum content from other school administrations, parents and the bike savvy. The curriculum should be ready to be tested at Hillview Middle School next school year. The long-term goal is to develop a standardized bike curriculum to be taught in-classroom citywide.
