The City of Menlo Park was recently recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community for 2023-2027. This continues the City’s Gold-level status, which previously was certified in 2017.

The League of American Bicyclists recognizes communities, businesses, universities and states across the country for bicycle friendliness based on the five Es: equity, engineering, education, encouragement and evaluation. Examples of the five Es in Menlo Park include bicycle lanes, education in schools (such as the Safe Routes to School program), Bike to Wherever Days, advocacy groups such as the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and bicycle shops. Based on this criteria, bicycle friendly communities are designated as Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum status.

This prestigious recognition highlights the vibrancy of bicycling in Menlo Park. As of Fall 2023, there were 480 Bicycle Friendly Communities across the United States, with 34 being Gold-level. Of those 34, only eight were in California including Menlo Park. The City is continuing to add bicycle improvements throughout Menlo Park to improve the bicycling experience, such as bicycle lanes, racks, Fix-it stations and educational efforts through its Safe Routes to School program.
