On Saturday, Jan. 11, the Laurel Safe Routes team held a one-time bike donation event where they asked members of the Laurel School community to drop off bikes and scooters to Lower Campus.

They received over twenty bikes and scooters of different sizes and even accessories such as a bike trailer or training wheels. The Laurel Safe Routes team is coordinating with the local Menlo-Atherton High School bike club, M-A on the Move, and other local agencies to repair the bikes that need tune-ups and quick fixes. The Safe Routes team will work with the school counselors to redistribute the donated bikes to the Laurel families who need a bike or scooter.

Ridership at Laurel School has increased significantly in recent years, thanks in part to the ongoing efforts of the school Safe Routes volunteers. On any given day, approximately 50 students bike to Lower Laurel (TK through second grade), while 130 students roll to Upper Laurel (third through fifth grade). This increase in ridership even prompted the PTO to purchase additional bike racks to accommodate the growing fleet of student riders.
