Children and parents on bikes

Encinal Elementary hosted their very first bike bus on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day.

A bike bus is a group of students biking together to school under the supervision of adults. The group follows a planned route and meets at designated stops to pick up students along the way and get to school.

School parent champions planned this event with over 70 participants! The Earth Day Bike Bus had two routes, coming from different parts of the city. The two groups met at Menlo Park City Hall in the morning and biked together to Encinal Elementary School.

The goals of Encinal Earth Day Bike Bus were to:

  • Help children gain confidence riding to school independently
  • Reduce traffic and promote sustainable transportation
  • Make getting to school feel safe and fun
  • Support children learning how to bike to school
  • Recruit parents and caregivers to form a stronger Safe Routes community to enable children to be independent and safe on their way to school
  • Get parents and children to be in better shape
