On February 11, 2020, the City Council conditionally approved the proposed project, located at 2 Meta Way (formerly 300 Constitution Drive), accepting the Planning Commission recommendation from their January 13, 2020, meeting to approve the proposal by citizenM for a conditional development permit (CDP) amendment to increase the approved number of hotel rooms from 200 to 240 rooms and decrease the number of onsite parking spaces from 245 to 118 parking spaces. The approval allowed citizenM to move forward with its current construction of the hotel at the Meta (formerly Facebook) West Campus. The hotel use was previously approved as part of the conditional development permit for the Facebook Campus Expansion Project. The approximately 79,413-square-foot, five-story hotel includes 240 hotel rooms, a restaurant, and hotel amenities. The hotel design includes modular construction.

Current status

Subsequent to the approval of the CDP amendment by the City Council, the Planning Commission reviewed and took the following actions on the project:

  • April 11, 2022: Major modification to the Third Amended and Restated CDP for interior and exterior changes to the previously approved hotel building and changes to the landscaping and on-site circulation.
  • May 15, 2023: Sign review for two new wall-mounted signs and one freestanding monument sign that would feature bright colors (specifically red), as well as lettering greater than 24 inches in size for the two wall-mounted signs.
  • June 5, 2023: Review of the location and size of the artwork installation. The design of any exterior lighting for the artwork would be subject to future Planning Commission review.
The citizenM Hotel received temporary occupancy in Fall 2023. The hotel, including its lobby bar/restaurant, is currently open. A separate restaurant space is not currently occupied.

Environmental review

The revisions to the approved CDP and the detailed architectural plans for the hotel were evaluated for consistency with the certified Facebook (now Meta) Campus Expansion Project Environmental Impact Report and the Addendum to the certified EIR. A second EIR addendum to the certified Facebook Campus Expansion Project was prepared for the project.

Second addendum to the certified environmental impact report

An EIR addendum was prepared for the aforementioned CDP amendment to document consistency with the previously certified EIR for the Meta (formerly Facebook) campus expansion, with regard to a proposed increase in the number of permitted hotel rooms and reduction in onsite parking spaces.
