Continental Drive Water Main Replacement Project

The Continental Drive Water Main Replacement Project replaced approximately 2,170 linear feet of 12-inch asbestos cement (AC) pipe with 12-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe on Continental Drive between Monte Rosa Drive and Tioga Drive. The scope of work also includes the installation of water services, water meters, water valves, and fire hydrants. Following the installation of the water infrastructure, the City will repave this street segment.

The City contracted with Casey Construction, Inc. to perform the work. Construction began in May and the City completed the installation of the water infrastructure in September. While preparing to repave, the City discovered shallow telecom conduits. The paving of Continental Drive has been put on hold while Comcast performs the relocation of their telephone/fiber communication lines. The City anticipates this will be completed mid-November and plans to repave immediately following their work. Paving will take approximately 2-3 weeks depending on weather conditions.

FAQs

What are the potential impacts to my landscaping?

The installation of service laterals and fire hydrant laterals will be trenchless beyond the edge of the valley gutter. Therefore, we do not anticipate there will be significant damage to existing landscaping. Any landscaping disturbed by the work will be restored at the City's expense to the fullest extent possible.

Why will the street be closed to though traffic during construction?

Existing utilities (sewer and storm) required that the design of the water main meander back and forth across the street. For this reason, we are not able to keep one side of the street open at all times for through traffic. We strongly advise residents in the community to prepare for delays.

Will I be receiving a new water meter?

All water meters will be upgraded as part of the City's Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI) project. Water meters less than 5 years old that have a digital register will not replaced. These meters will have a radio attached to transmit meter reads to the AMI system. All other water meters will be replaced and have a radio. For more information, visit the AMI project website at menlopark.gov/AMI.
