Be extra careful while online shopping this holiday season to prevent being a victim of a scam. Check out these tips on ways to prevent and fight online scams:

  • Research the website: if you have never heard of this website, take time to research reviews before making a purchase. If a price on an item seems too good to be true, it is probably a scam.
  • Use a credit card instead of a debit card: credit cards provide increased security and they are not tied to your bank accounts, many credit cards have fraud protection that could help you get your money back if you are scammed.
  • Check out as a guest: when you create an account the company will store your personal information which can be stolen if the company experiences a data breach.
  • Setup automatic alerts for your debit and credit cards: be proactive about monitoring your accounts by setting up text message alerts for purchases made on your card.
  • Use a different password for every account: using different passwords prevents a scammer access to all of your accounts should they gain access to one of your accounts. Resetting an account password is less work than dealing with a scam.
