On March 6, 2023, the National Weather Service updated its hydrologic outlook with a statement calling for moderate to heavy rainfall and the increased potential for flooding across the region later this week as another atmospheric river approaches. They currently predict heavy rain chances arrive late Thursday or Thursday night and continue into Friday, with periods of moderate to heavy rain over the weekend with more scattered showers and continued rain chances into next week.

While we are still several days out and forecasts will continue to be refined and improved as we get closer to the storm's arrival, it is always important to stay alert and take necessary steps to prepare for potential storm-related hazards.

City staff will be monitoring weather reports all week and have crews on standby this week and into the weekend as needed to respond to storm-related calls.

Storm preparedness tips

  3. Create an emergency kit: Prepare an emergency kit that includes necessary supplies such as non-perishable food, water, flashlight, batteries, first aid kit and any required medication.
  4. Secure your property: Make sure your property is safe from potential hazards such as flooding with sand bags and blowing debris. Clean your gutters, secure loose outdoor items and make sure your roof is in good condition.
  5. Prepare for power outages: In case of power outages, make sure you have backup batteries or generators to keep essential appliances running. Make a plan in case any power outage becomes extended.
  6. If you live in an area prone to flooding, make a plan to park your car a few blocks away from flood prone areas and where it is safe and accessible. Make sure you can easily get out and reach safer areas.

Remember, being prepared is the key to staying safe during a storm. Take the necessary precautions now and stay alert to updates from local authorities. Stay safe!
