The City is continuing to design and implement new landscaping on the Willow Road / US 101 interchange. As of July 2024, the project plans are at 90% complete. Final plans are expected to be completed in late 2024. Once plans are complete, the project will be bid and construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2025. The City recently developed a series of images(PDF, 16MB) from three different viewpoints showing what the interchange would look like in five to 15 years once all of the plants and trees have been established. The proposed planting will maximize the restoration of the tree canopy lost during interchange construction. Trees have a significant impact on our lives, the environment and the local economy. They offer numerous benefits such as sequestering carbon, increasing property values and providing ecological benefits such as improving air and water quality, supplying wildlife habitat, providing shade and reducing noise pollution. Funding for the landscaping is provided by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. Project partners include the City of East Palo Alto, Caltrans and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. For more information, please see the project website.
