Improve your disaster preparedness
Published on September 08, 2025
During National Disaster Preparedness Month, the City of Menlo Park wants to remind our community that being prepared for a disaster is crucial for ensuring safety and peace of mind. Start by engaging in open discussions with your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers about the importance of preparedness. While these conversations might be challenging, they're essential to ensure everyone is ready for any unexpected events.
Review Your Emergency Plan
To be well-prepared, take the time to review and update your emergency plan. Check to ensure your family’s emergency plan is current and comprehensive.
Key elements to include are:
- Current contact information: Make sure all phone numbers and email addresses are up-to-date.
- Designated meeting points: Identify safe locations where your family can reunite after a disaster.
- Evacuation routes: Plan and familiarize everyone with the safest routes to evacuate your home or workplace.
Involve Everyone in Your Plan
It is vital to involve all family members in the planning process. Ensure everyone, including children, understands the plan and their specific roles. If someone in your household has access and functional needs, such as using a wheelchair, ensure the plan accommodates them. Remember to include your pets in the planning process as well, considering their needs in an emergency.
Understand Local Risks
Knowing the specific risks your community may face is also crucial. For instance, in Menlo Park, potential risks include floods, fires and earthquakes. Familiarizing yourself with these risks allows you to tailor your preparedness plan accordingly.
By taking these straightforward steps, you can help ensure that you, your loved ones and your community are ready for whatever challenges may arise. For more information and resources, visit menlopark.gov/prepared.
