Prepare before Halloween
- Choose comfortable costumes and shoes that do not restrict movement
- Avoid dark-colored costumes
- Make sure costumes are fireproof or treated with fire retardant
- Use reflective fabric or tape to improve visibility
On Halloween day
- Turn on exterior lights and remove objects that could cause tripping
- Avoid trick-or-treating alone – stay with an adult and in groups
- Remind children to steer clear of strangers
- Start early in the evening and stay in your own neighborhood
- Carry a flashlight or a light stick and a cellphone
- Stay in well-lit areas
- Walk on sidewalks and cross at corners or lights; do not cross midblock
- Avoid dark areas and houses
- Never enter a home without parental permission, even if in a group
- Inspect Halloween treats before letting children eat them
- Eat only treats that are sealed and/or in original packaging
- Always carry a flashlight
Report suspicious activity to police using the non-emergency line at 650-330-6300 and for emergencies always call 9-1-1.
