As the rainy season is upon us and the end of daylight saving time, our streets are getting darker earlier. Follow these safety tips to make sure you are safe and warm when walking or rolling.

Walkers

  • Wave at drivers and make eye contact when crossing the street to make sure you are seen. Remember to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear if it’s raining.
  • Wear high-visibility clothing and vests whenever possible.

Bicyclists

  • It's important—now more than ever—to use front and back bicycle lights that are bright and positioned correctly. Your bicycle must be equipped with a white light in the front and a red reflector or red flashing light on the back.
  • Use additional reflectors on pedals and wear reflective clothing for more visibility.
  • Be sure to ride slowly and practice caution on wet roads to avoid puddles that may be potholes in disguise.
  • Dress warmly and wear gloves to break the cold wind.

Drivers

  • Use caution and look out for people walking and biking.
  • To improve visibility, turn on and use low beams when driving in fog or rain.
  • Make sure you winterize your vehicle by checking your tires and windshield wipers.
