In March, crossing guards are celebrated throughout the San Mateo County. If your school has a crossing guard, take the time to recognize them by:

  • Share a story with the Menlo Park Safe Routes to School program about your crossing guard to show how they are special to you and make a difference in your life. Your crossing guard could win a prize!
  • Request a certificate of appreciation. Please fill in all relevant information as San Mateo County will use this data to send over a special gift to all the crossing guards at your school! Crossing guards can include teachers, parent volunteers or even outside contractors.
  • Thank your crossing guards: There are many ways to express gratitude for your crossing guards whether it’s bringing them homemade gifts, hosting a meal or sending thank you cards. The San Mateo County Office of Education’s Safe Routes to School program has prepared flyers and thank you cards that you can download.
  • Celebrate in the classroom: Teachers can bring Crossing Guard Appreciation Week into their classrooms. Some ideas include painting a giant thank you banner in art class, writing and performing an appreciation song in music class, writing poems in English class or going for a walk during PE to visit your crossing guard.
