Group bike rides you don’t want to miss

The following events are a great opportunity to enjoy the last days of summer biking in Menlo Park streets with your family and friends.

Group ride to Hillview Middle

Parents of middle school students, don’t miss this practice group ride to Hillview Middle! Whether it is the first year you and your child consider biking to Hillview Middle or if you need a refresher before school starts, join the fun! There will be different meeting spots for families from Laurel, Encinal and Oak Knoll.

Departures will be from: Bay and Ringwood Willow and Gilbert Burgess Park Allied Arts Guild

When: Saturday, Aug. 17 at 9 a.m.

Library to Library Group Ride

Ride with your friends at the library! The group will start at the Menlo Park Library and make their leisurely way to the Belle Haven Community Campus, home of the new Belle Haven Library. The group will stop at a few Little Free Libraries along the way. The ride takes about 30 minutes and is best suited for teens, adults and older kids. Bring your helmet, some water and a backpack (for the books)!

When: Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 – 11 a.m.

Middle School Bike Skills Workshop

Will your middle schooler bike to school this school year? Wheel Kids Middle School Bike Skills prepares students to ride to middle school. The student (and their adult) will learn how to become confident riders by learning the rules of the road and how to avoid common crashes, practicing bike handling skills and putting it all into practice during a group neighborhood ride.

Ages: All children entering sixth – ninth grade. Level four+ skill level. Learn more about rider skill categories.

When: Saturday, Sept. 14 from 9:15 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.

Where: Arrillaga Recreation Center, 700 Alma St., Menlo Park, CA, 94025

Cost: $165/student + accompanied adult

Middle school is a great moment to ride to school as children are ready for more independence.

The half day class covers:

  • Basic traffic laws
  • Navigating busy intersections
  • The most common types of bike crashes and how to avoid them how to position yourself on the road
  • How to let drivers know your intentions
  • Proper hand signals for cyclists
  • Basic bike and helmet fitting
