Pilot project to improve safety on Coleman Avenue
Published on September 09, 2025
On April 29, the Menlo Park City Council approved removing parking from the north side of the City portion of Coleman Avenue to allow sufficient roadway space for the Coleman Avenue Pilot.
This summer, the City installed the Coleman Avenue Pilot. The pilot includes a westbound bike lane (towards Ringwood Avenue) and a shared lane with people driving and biking eastbound (towards Willow Road). Additionally, speed cushions have been installed on Coleman Avenue to reduce the speeds of people driving and stop signs were installed on Coleman Avenue at Santa Monica Avenue to provide clear right-of-way designation for people crossing the street to access the nearby bus stop.
This corridor serves many students who walk and bike to nearby schools including Laurel Lower Campus, Laurel Upper Campus, Menlo-Atherton High School, Silicon Valley International School, KIPP Valiant Community Prep and more.
The installation of the Coleman Avenue Pilot will improve mobility, safety and accessibility for students walking and biking to schools across Menlo Park.
