New water connection requests are now only accepted online. Please submit all associated documents to the online portal. Staff will process your application and respond to your request as soon as possible.

Online

Step 1.Review the water connection guidelines:

Carefully review Menlo Park Municipal Water's water connection guidelines(PDF, 98KB) and have ready the electronic copy of your plans stamped and approved by the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

For information about backflow prevention assemblies, refer to Menlo Park Municipal Water's backflow prevention (cross connection control) device installation guidelines(PDF, 241KB).

Step 2.Complete the online form:

Online water connection application

  • Register for an account at the city’s online permit portal.
  • At the home screen under "Public Works" tab, select "Create an Application."
  • Review the terms and conditions before checking the consent box.

Step 3.Apply for an encroachment permit, if required:

If you are installing or replacing the service line (between the water meter and water main), an encroachment permit is required. The encroachment permit is a separate permit from water connections and the review of these applications will happen in parallel. Go to encroachment permit for more information and to apply online.

Step 4.The City will review the applications and plans submitted:

The City will begin the process of determining appropriate fees for the requested connections.

Step 5.View application status:

  1. Go to the online permit portal.
  2. Toward the end of the webpage under Public Works, click "Search Application."
  3. Under General Search, enter your record number in the Record Number section, beginning with "WAT"

Step 6.Once payment is received, the city will authorize the work and provide applicable contact information.

For NEW water connection requests (new water meters at new locations):

Once the water meter is installed and inspected, the water operator will temporarily lock the meter. It is the customer’s responsibility to contact the City’s billing contractor and provide information in order to activate the water account. Please allow 5-7 business days from the meter inspection date before contacting the City’s billing contractor. See the water billing and assistance webpage for further instruction. Once an account is activated, the water operator can unlock the meter and turn on water service.
