Utility requirements
The project shall comply with all requirements of the utility companies.
Electric utilities
The City recommends that electric utilities be placed underground. However, this is up to the discretion of the owner and developer. Please contact Pacific Gas and Electric.
Sanitary sewer system
For permits for new laterals, requirements for cleanouts and other questions, please contact West Bay Sanitary District.
Water system
Several water providers operate within Menlo Park city limits. Look up your water provider by searching with your address.
If the project is in the Menlo Park Municipal Water service area and a new or larger water meter is required, the owner or contractor shall review the guidelines and submit an application to the Engineering Division.
The cost for the new meter will be determined after review of the application and plans. The fees will include:
- Staff time to process application, review plans, and if necessary, inspect installation of water service.
- Cost of new water meter materials.
- Water capacity charge based on new meter size, and if applicable, credit for existing meter. See the water rates for current water capacity charges.
Note: The water service line (between the water meter and water main) must be the same size as the requested water meter, at a minimum. In cases where the existing service line is smaller than the requested water meter size, the service line must be upgraded.
A backflow prevention device will be required at the meter for all residential projects with fire sprinklers, in addition to irrigation and commercial projects. All installations shall conform to city standard details. For more information, contact Menlo Park Municipal Water at 650-330-6750.
