Capital improvement projects

The capital improvement projects include the planning, design, and construction of the city's capital improvement and major maintenance projects. The assigned staff include four engineers and a construction inspector. Professional consultants are used when necessary to provide specialized services and expertise.

Bedwell Bayfront Park entrance improvements

The Bedwell Bayfront Park entrance improvements aim to increase park awareness and visibility, provide an attractive entry point and improve access.

Belle Haven Traffic Calming Plan implementation

This project is implementing traffic calming improvements to reduce speed and cut-through traffic in the Belle Haven neighborhood. This project is required as a mitigation measure for the Facebook Campus Expansion project.

Burgess Park playground improvements

The city is renovating the playground at Burgess Park. The project is currently in the early stages of design, and the City is seeking public opinion on various playground equipment options.

Caltrain grade separation

This project is conducting design and environmental review of Caltrain grade separation. On March 5, 2019, City Council approved the project study report with the hybrid option (Alternative C) as the preferred option, and reaffirmed that decision on Feb. 28. This option would grade separate Ravenswood, Oak Grove and Glenwood Avenues; Encinal Avenue would remain at grade.

Caltrain Quiet Zone project

The City is evaluating and designing improvements at the four at grade crossings of the Caltrain railroad to enable establishment of a quiet zone that would remove the requirement for trains to blow their horns at each crossing.

Coleman-Ringwood Avenues Transportation Study

The goal of this study is to identify a conceptual street design developed with community input and engagement for Ringwood and Coleman Avenues that improves transportation, safety, and mobility for all roadway users.

El Camino Real Crossings improvements

This project designs improvements for east-west pedestrian and bicycle connections as identified in the El Camino Real Corridor Study at Ravenswood Avenue, Encinal Avenue and Roble Avenue.

Emergency water storage/supply

This project will provide emergency water for residents and businesses that receive Menlo Park Municipal Water and are located east of El Camino Real.

Haven Avenue streetscape improvement

The Haven Avenue streetscape project will provide new bicycle and pedestrian facilities to Haven Avenue, connecting Menlo Park, San Mateo County and Redwood City residents and employees.

Middle Avenue complete streets

The Middle Avenue Complete Streets project proposes bicycle and pedestrian improvements along the entire length of Middle Avenue between El Camino Real and Olive Street.

Middle Avenue Caltrain crossing

This project will provide a grade separated pedestrian and bicycle rail crossing under the Caltrain railway to connect Burgess Park to the southside of the Caltrain tracks and El Camino Real at Middle Avenue.

Nealon Park pedestrian and intersection improvements

The project includes installation of sidewalk, curb ramps and related improvements on Middle Avenue in front of Nealon Park.

Street resurfacing program

This ongoing project includes the selection and detailed design of streets to be resurfaced throughout the City during the fiscal year.

Water main replacements

The water main replacement project is a recurring project that involves replacing old pipelines that are at the end of their useful life. The City’s Water System Master Plan identifies capital improvement projects recommended in order to maintain the water system.

Willow Oaks Park improvements

The City is making improvements in Willow Oaks Park that include playground renovations, dog park enhancements, a new restroom building and pedestrian/bike path updates to improve connectivity for the surrounding neighborhood.

Willow Road Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety project

This project is designing and implementing pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Willow Road (State Route 114) between Bayfront Expressway and U.S. Highway 101, including enhanced pedestrian crossings, a new pedestrian crossing at O'Brien Street and separated (Class IV) bikeways on both sides of the street.

Willow Road/U.S. 101 interchange

The City is working with Caltrans and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority to design and install new landscaping landscaping on the interchange.

Middlefield Road Safe Streets

This project is identifying improvements to Middlefield Road to improve safety for all users. In early 2023, the City converted a portion of the road to three lanes (one travel lane in each direction plus a center turn lane) and added buffers to the existing bike lanes as a pilot. The City will be evaluating additional safety improvements for areas that will be repaved soon.

Automated Meter Infrastructure

The automated meter infrastructure project is an ongoing project that will digitalize all water meters of Menlo Park Municipal Water customers allowing for hourly water use data

Comprehensive Shuttle Study

The City of Menlo Park offers free shuttles that connect Caltrain and local business parks, along with free community shuttles. This project will analyze current transportation options and propose service changes to better serve the community.

Streetlight high voltage circuit replacement

Three neighborhoods in the City have streetlights that have older, high voltage circuits. These circuits are challenging to repair and can lead to significant outages. This project is working on replacing these circuits with normal, low voltage circuits.

Kelly Park Turf and Track Replacement

The scope of work for the proposed project includes removing and replacing the existing synthetic turf and rubberized track.

2024 Citywide Slurry Seal Project

The City will soon begin design for the 2024 Citywide Slurry Seal Project. This project is included in the City’s 5-Year street maintenance program presented to the City Council on December 5, 2023.

Urban Forest Management Plan

The Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) is a project focused on establishing management goals and strategies to promote a sustainable urban forest in Menlo Park. The plan will provide a long-term roadmap for the city to proactively and effectively maintain the benefits of the community's urban forest canopy.
